Long Son Pagoda
Details
Long Son Pagoda is located at 23 Thang 10 Street, at the foot of Trai Thuy Hill. The pagoda was founded in 1886, originally named Dang Long Tu, built by monk Thich Ngo Tri. After a storm, the pagoda was relocated and rebuilt at its current location, and in 1940 it was renovated on a large scale.
The most famous feature is the outdoor statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni on the hilltop, completed in 1963. The statue is 14 meters high, placed on a 7-meter-high lotus pedestal, and was once recognized as the largest outdoor Buddha statue in Vietnam. To reach the statue, visitors climb 193 stone steps; along the way, there is a statue of the Buddha entering Nirvana and a panoramic view of the city.
The pagoda is also a Buddhist center of the province, associated with the Buddhist revival movement in Central Vietnam in the early 20th century.
