Pasteur Institute Nha Trang
Details
The Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang is a scientific research and experimentation facility specializing in tropical diseases and pharmaceuticals. It is a public service unit under the Ministry of Health, with the Department of Preventive Medicine acting as the state management agency representing the Ministry of Health for professional oversight.
The first Pasteur Institute established in Indochina was initiated by Dr. Albert Calmette and built in Saigon in January 1891, named "L'Institut Pasteur de Saigon." Four years later, in 1895, Dr. Alexandre Yersin established another branch in Nha Trang. With financial support from the Governor-General of Indochina, Chevassieux, Yersin set up a simple laboratory on the coast of Nha Trang and built a farm in Suối Dầu to raise buffalo, cows, donkeys, horses, as well as rabbits and mice for experiments.
In 1904, the institute was renamed the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang. Yersin's laboratory was rebuilt on a large scale by the French government in Indochina, including laboratories, medicine preparation rooms, an anatomy room, animal pens, a water tower, an ice factory, etc. The institute's tasks at that time were to produce medicines, train personnel, and conduct research on malaria and various bacteria, parasites causing diseases in humans, animals, and plants.
The Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang functions to organize and implement activities, programs, and projects in the fields of preventive medicine and public health in the central region provinces from Quảng Bình to Bình Thuận.
Inside the campus of the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang is the Alexandre Yersin Museum, which houses many memorabilia of Yersin.
